Visit to Córdoba, Thursday, Feb. 5, 2015

What a beautiful day! Cool, but clear and sunny for our drive from Parragil to stunning Córdoba. Jean and I struck gold with our choice of hotel, right across the river from the star of the city-the famous Mezguita, or Cathedral in the center of a mosque. Begun as a Christian church by the Visigoths in the 600's, it became an Islamic Mosque in 784, then a Catholic Church from 1236 until the present.

WOW! Is the only way to describe this building. We've never seen anything like it, and only pictures begin to detail the description. We can only imagine how crowded it must be in the summer. Today there were perhaps 100 visitors in the whole place. It is surrounded by the old buildings in the historical center of Córdoba. As we walked around the outside we came upon the location for a Flamenco performance that we'd read about online, so we stopped in and bought tickets for tonight. Details to follow!

In the preceding photos you can see a Parador, (a castle converted to a hotel) on the way to Córdoba, as well as the Roman bridge from our hotel to the Mosque, inside the mosque/church, and some shots in the area surrounding the mosque.
