Florence, May 23, 2010

Last night when we returned to Florence from Siena, we spent about an hour walking through the old town to get our bearings, and enjoyed the evening, even though my back was in spasms, and we were tired. Glad we did though, as it was beautiful.

Today we arrived downtown just in time to see a medieval-costumed group take part in a commemorative ceremony of some kind. Costumes and flags were colourful and authentic. Then it was on to the Ponte Vecchio, with its gold jewelry shops (originally they were for selling live animals, but apparently there was quite a stench which the Medicis didn't appreciate, so they ordered the market to sell jewelry. We visited the Pitti Palace and Boboli Gardens, which were mostly for hedges, trees, and grass - not much colour to speak of. More gelato before heading back to our hotel for a rest.

This evening we met our guide and another tour member, Linda and Toni respectively, and enjoyed dinner together. We had met Linda four years ago, which is when she first mentioned this tour, and invited us to join it. Better late than never!
