May 24-Florence, Arezzo, Monterchi

We set off for Maridiana after breakfast in our silver Ford Transit van, driven by Linda our guide, and stopped before lunch at Arezzo. There we visited a church and saw our first of several frescoes by Piero della Francesco, who was born in nearby San Sepolchro. We enjoyed our first lunch as a group, then viewed more Francesco frescoes in the Church of the True Way, right on the main piazza. Of course I managed to step in some dog poo...luckily there was a stone handy for scraping.

Then it was off to Monterchi, a small village that has a good museum with a restored Francesco fresco. It may be the most famous, the pregnant Madonna del Parto flanked by two identical angels. Watched a 45 minute video about Piero, and then headed back to our van for the last leg of the drive to Maridiana.

The map of Umbria shows where we stayed....the group of orange spots directly above Perugia. You can enlarge the map twice to read that we stayed just out side Umbertide, off the E45 highway. None of our day trips were more than an hour's drive from Maridiana. See next post for Maridiana details.
