Day 4 Calgary - Rockies & Evening@Stampede
The day started out sunny and pleasant, so we headed out to Kananaskis in A's new car. Kananaskis was the site of the 1988 Calgary Olympic downhill skiing events. Today it is a quiet resort without a village.....mostly the Delta hotel. Few tourists were around. Our drive to the Rockies gave us good views of the foothills and the eastern edge of the mountains.
We had packed a picnic, so ate under the covered porch of the general store, as it had started to sprinkle. We drove a bit further into the Kananaskis Valley, and saw one Dall sheep by the side of the road, but that was the extent of the wildlife. It looked very threatening by the time we got closer to Calgary on the return trip, and we later heard that there had been quite a hail storm in some parts of the city. Luckily for A's new car, no hail on us!
Got home, grabbed a powernap, and we were off again to the Stampede. T. joined us and we parked at a friend's place near the C-Train station. Got the train direct to the Stampede grounds, where we first wandered through the horse barns. We then took in the cattle penning competition in the Saddledome and had supper. Then it was back to the grandstands for the Chuckwagon races.
To be continued.
